Skating Reminders

Our skating dates are fast approaching. Here are a few reminders:

We are skating on Thursday February 4, 11 and 18th from 10:50am - 11:55am.

All students and parents on the ice must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

Skates must be brought to the school and rink in a bag.

Volunteers are asked to meet us at the arena.

Newspaper request!

Our Scientists in the School workshop has been booked for the afternoon of March 2nd. Volunteer info will be coming home in the next few weeks.

We will need A LOT of newspaper for this workshop. If you have any Stittsville News, Ottawa Citizen or Ottawa Sun, please collect and send them in. Flyers WILL NOT work so please send in papers only.

Descriptive writing

We have been working hard on our reading strategy of Visualizing and connecting it to our writing focus: Descriptive Writing. We have also been learning about nouns, adjectives and verbs to help us write clearer sentences. Check out some of our favourite videos...

Students are working on choosing nouns, adjectives and verbs that help them to write sentences with detail.

Today we were turning simple sentences into WOW sentences with good detail. We will continue to work on our descriptive writing over the next few weeks.

2 D Geometry

The grade ones have been hard at work exploring 2D geometry. They went on a shape hunt to find shapes in the world around us!

They used 2D shapes to create their own masterpieces!

They've been working in their math groups to solve 2D geometry problems.

We are wrapping up our geometry unit by learning about symmetry!

Reading Buddies and Reader's Theatre Scripts

The grade ones have teamed up with the grade 3 class for reading buddies. We have decided during this time to work on Reader's Theatre. One week, half of the grade 1s will work with their buddies on their play and the following week the groups will switch.

Reader's Theatre scripts for group 1 were sent home today. Group 2 will bring theirs home next week. Please take some time to help your child practise learning the words of their part. We will also be practising at school. Since we only meet our full groups every second week, we will be working on this for the next month or so.

Any reading practise can also be included as part of their Sens reading cup minutes. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Kleenex Donations

We are on our last box of Kleenex in the classroom. If anyone has a box that they could donate to the grade ones and their runny noses we would greatly appreciate it!

Spare Socks

Our class is looking for spare socks that the students have grown out of or lost the matching sock to use in the classroom as whiteboard erasers. If you have any clean spare socks that you wouldn't mind sending in for us to use, that would be great. Thanks!

Language

In reading, we will be focusing on determining important ideas by retelling ideas in a fiction texts. We continue to use our GO Map to recall the important details we need.

In writing, we are transferring our understanding of fiction texts by becoming author's of our own narrative stories. Students are brainstorming with the help of the GO Map and are writing stories with a clear beginning, middle and end.

Students did an outstanding job with their oral presentations. They used the different techniques practised in class to share their book report.

Math

We have started working on Probability. We are learning about the chances of everyday things happening using our math words (certain, likely, unlikely, impossible and always, sometimes, never). We are also making predictions and completing probability experiments to determine the likelihood of different results (ex. spinner games, rolling dice, flipping cups).

How you can help at home:

- practise counting by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to 100

- locate different numbers on the 100s chart

- talk about the likelihood of events

- look for and name 3D solids around you
