Primary Craft Day: We will be running a craft day Wednesday afternoon for block 3 and 4 (1:05 - 3:50).  Students will complete three crafts (1 in each grade one classroom).  Parents are welcomed to join their child and help out in the classes with the crafts!

Long Vowel Videos

We have been working on the long vowel sounds (when vowels say their own name).  Here are a few of our favourites that helps us understand why some vowels are long vowels...

Wearing Pink on Wednesday for Bully Prevention and Awareness Week

This week is Bully Prevention and Awareness Week.  Students are encouraged to wear pink on Wednesday as symbol that we are working together to become more aware of and prevent bullying in our school.  The idea of wearing pink came from a group of students in Nova Scotia who decided to take a stand against the bullying of a younger student for wearing a pink shirt to school by organizing their own pink shirt protest.

Making Concrete Graphs

This week, we started our study of Data Management.  We built concrete graphs as a class.  We are learning how to read and compare the data using math words (i.e. more, less).  We will be working on creating and reading concrete graphs, bar graphs and pictographs.

Estimating and Counting

The grades ones finished up representing numbers by estimating and counting.  They were learning to make good guesses and then use the ten frames to help them count.

Jersey Day Thursday

This Thursday will be Jersey Day!  Students are encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing a favourite jersey or team shirt!

Sorry for any confusion!

Counting Videos

We have been practising counting by 1s, 5s and 10s.  Here are a few of our favourite counting videos to practise.

Short Vowel Videos

Here are two more of the vowel videos we've been using to learn our short vowel sounds!

Updates from last week

Last week was quite a busy one!  It was so great to meet with so many of you on Thursday night.  If you were unable to make it, I will try to touch base with you over the phone in the next few weeks!

Here are a few updates from grade one last week.

Pumpkin Inquiry - In honour of Halloween, we took some math time to investigate all about Pumpkins.  We counted lines, measured the height, found out pumpkins float and even counted all 312 seeds in our big pumpkin.

Short Vowel Sounds - We wrapped up our last week of short vowels by creating vowel bats.  This week, we will start looking at long vowel sounds!  I will post our short vowel videos we used and will add our long vowel videos soon!

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers - We have been busy creating our own number match game to show what we have learned about representing numbers.

Signs of Fall - We have been investigating the signs of fall that are around us.  If you have any signs of fall at home, feel free to send in a picture or the item!  We would love to share with the class.
